Birthday parties are no longer what they used to be. Now, it’s all about the aesthetics and they usually require a huge budget. But you know the frugal gal in me had to figure out a way to find a balance between the aesthetic and the budget. Year after year, I am always looking for frugal birthday party ideas for kids. Because who says you can’t host the best party ever without going broke?

My smallest little, L, is turning three in September. I haven’t decided exactly what I’m doing for him yet since I don’t know if my husband will be at home or away for work.

Basically, I’m thinking I will either do a small party at his pre-school or alternatively, a party at home. This post was inspired by my thoughts and ideas as I start planning the perfect party for little L.

It goes without saying that figuring out your budget and sticking to it is the first step when it comes to having a budget-friendly birthday party! This will decide all other aspects of the party – including your location, the number of guests you invite and the menu that you plan.

Sit with your pen and paper and write everything out. Know exactly how much you can spend without racking up debt. And don’t worry, even if your budget is low, the following tips will set you up for frugal birthday party success! Your kid’s party will be so amazing, people will never guess you were on a tight budget to begin with!

2. Have the Party at Home

When it comes to frugal birthday party for kids, what’s better than a free location? Skip the expensive venues and host at home instead! Your driveway, the back yard, your living room – all blank spaces waiting to turn into a beautiful party venue.

You can get really fun and creative with a home party. From a picnic birthday party in your backyard to a movie night party in your cozy living room, there are so many fun themes to choose from! Here are some details and themes you might love.

Movie Night Theme – Pillows and blankets, homemade popcorn, DIY printed movie tickets, hot dogs and your child’s favorite movie, dress code is pajamas

Easy themes include princesses, superheroes, dinosaurs, rainbows, pirates, trucks/cars and candy. You can almost always walk into your neighborhood Dollar Tree and pick up decor for these themes. Which brings me to my next point…

4. Use Dollar Store Decorations

I swear by Dollar Tree decorations! You can pick up balloons, tablecloths, streamers, cups, plates, cutlery and decor at Dollar Tree. In the past, I’ve also ordered decorations from Temu. Both are great options.

5. DIY Everything

Even if you’re having a party on a budget, you can still achieve an expensive look by DIY-ing and getting creative! There are countless tutorials on social media with step by step guides on how to achieve a high-end look on a tight budget.

From balloon arches to cake tables, there’s a DIY tutorial for everything. You can use the same Dollar Store materials and put together the most boujee-looking birthday party that can be imagined.

Some things to DIY include the party invitations (or make a free one using Canva and then send digitally), balloon garland (there are actually cheap DIY kits available now), photo booth, piñata, party favors etc.

6. Use What you Already Have

Already have decor or party items from previous parties or events? Please don’t feel pressured to buy all new things! Some or most of these can be reused to save money. With a few tweaks they may even look like all new decor!

7. Make the Eats yourself

Save money by baking the cake, cupcakes, cookies and making the foods yourself. Don’t worry if you’re not much of a baker. A simple frosted cake with sprinkles can be just as festive.

Another frugal party trick I have used in the past was getting a grocery store cake and adding more decorations myself. A cheap way to jazz up your cake is by creating custom toppers. I printed out the characters, cut them out and stuck them onto toothpicks to create the cake toppers. Voila!

Additionally, stick to a budget-friendly menu with simple foods to avoid overwhelm. Include foods such as homemade pizza, hot dogs, mini sandwiches, Mac and cheese, sliders, fries and nuggets, tacos, nachos, quesadillas and spaghetti.

Choose just a few options. You don’t have to serve a ton of different foods.

8. Choose a Party Time that Helps you Save Money

Did you know you can save money by strategically choosing a party time that doesn’t require serving a full meal? For example, if you choose a party time of between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., you can serve a few finger foods and snacks, cake and ice cream.

However, the type of party and time slot that you choose will obviously depend on the age of the child.

Should you have a lunch party or a dinner party? Deciding on the type of party, and where or what time it starts, depends on the age of the child and the age of the guests. 9. Keep the Guest List Small

One of the easiest ways to save money is by inviting fewer guests. Choose people who really do support you or your child. A smaller guest list means less food, few favors and fewer supplies to buy.

Ice cream scoops with cone hats – Decorate scoops of coconut ice cream with chocolate chips for eyes and a nose. Place an upside-down cone on top of the scoop as a hat.
